The Final Cord

“A Final Cord” is a self-bound photobook project. It is a love letter to myself, to my motherhood, and to motherhood in general. This book delves into the complex emotions that accompany motherhood - especially during those first few weeks. It reflects on the simultaneous experiences of heartbreak and joy, exhaustion and immense strength, acceptance and letting go.

The photographic documentation of my fourth and final postpartum period, while also raising an almost teenage son, serves as an ode and expression of all those maternal feelings and stages. It is a personal testimony to how motherhood evolves over the years and how one’s identity as a mother is continually reshaped.

The title “A Final Cord” intentionally refers to the umbilical cord - the first physical bond between mother and child. The umbilical cord symbolizes the deep, unbreakable connection that parents and children share throughout life. At the same time, it reminds us that motherhood is a journey of continual letting go. The cutting of the umbilical cord is the first symbolic act of this release - a moment that marks both a beginning and an end.
